The Lyrebirds Aqua Class is run, supported by Tharawal and the Heart Foundation. The group meets once a week for an aqua aerobics class, then sit over a cuppa tea and healthy snack for a yarn at the end of the class – with Women’s Heart Health and how to promote the messages amongst women of our community as key focus.
The Lyrebird Aqua Class, facilitated by Community Dietitian and assisted by a Health Promotion Officer runs:
Thursdays (during school terms)
11.30am – 1.00pm
Eagle Vale Leisure Centre, Emerald Dr, Eagle Vale NSW 2558
This program provides a culturally safe and social environment, which have encouraged good discussions and participants sharing personal experiences.
Topics chosen have varied from risk factors, signs and symptoms of heart attacks to managing blood pressure, blood cholesterols and importance of healthy eating, physical activity and regular check-ups.
The group was also encouraged to discuss the cultural appropriateness of the resources and together discuss a more suitable design and content for the local Aboriginal community. To date, the group has developed a series of resources used throughout TAC and by the National Heart Foundation, spreading their message “Strong Heart, Strong Community”.
