Supporting and promoting the social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people and community. We work from a belief that connection to land, culture, spirituality, family, and community are important to people and impact their wellbeing.


What is social and emotional wellbeing?


The term "social and emotional wellbeing" is used by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to describe the social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural wellbeing of a person. The term recognises that connection to land, culture, spirituality, family, and community are important to people and can impact on their wellbeing. It also recognises that a person’s social and emotional wellbeing is influenced by policies and past events. There are many different factors that can impact on a person’s social and emotional wellbeing. These can range from normal everyday stresses to major life events.

Social Support Program

What is the Social Support Program?

Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation's holistic approach to “Aboriginal health” means not just the physical well-being of an individual but refers to the social, emotional and cultural well-being of the whole community in which each individual is able to achieve their full potential as a human being thereby bringing about the total well-being of their community.

It is a whole of life view and includes the cyclical concept of life-death-life. As defined in NACCHO’s Constitution as amended 9 March 2006 also from the National Aboriginal Health Strategy (NAHS) 1989.

Our community consists of generally large extended families that have multiple generations living with or within close proximity of each other.

There is no "one size fits all", our family’s needs range and the level of support will differ from family to family. Many of our families have complex needs and a multitude of issues that span generations (Transgenerational Trauma)

The social support program is a program to assist people with various social issues working with internal and external services to provide the best service possible for individuals, families and the wider community. We provide support services, advocacy, referral pathways, emergency relief and more through the Social Support Program.

Appointments for Emergency Relief are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10.00am-12.00pm.

Emergency Relief

Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation have an Emergency Relief Program under the Social Support Program which assists community members experiencing financial difficulty. Eligibility will be determined based on the assessment. We provide 3 types of Emergency Relief assistance at Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation; food assistance, electricity & gas assistance and Telstra Assistance. Each of the assistance schemes have their own eligibility criteria and timeframes for eligibility based on policies and funding requirements.

What assistance is available in Emergency Relief?

Food Assistance

The Food assistance is for people experiencing financial crisis. This scheme is not available on an ongoing basis.

Please Note: You may not be eligible for Food Assistance if you have received Food Vouchers within a 3-month period however, the Social Support Worker may be able to refer you to another service who may be able to assist with either vouchers or food hampers.

Electricity and Gas Vouchers EAPA (Energy Accounts Payment Assistance) Scheme:

The Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) Scheme helps people experiencing a short term financial crisis or emergency to pay their electricity or gas bill. The scheme helps people stay connected to essential energy services in a time of need. This scheme is not available on an ongoing basis.

Please Note: You may not be eligible for EAPA assistance if you have received EAPA within a 6-month period under the policy for the Department of Industry Resources and Energy. However, the Social Support Worker may be able to advocate on your behalf and arrange a suitable payment arrangement with your energy company or refer you to another company who may be able to provide alternative options.

Telstra Bill Assistance Program:

The Telstra Bill Assistance Program is aimed at assisting people who are experiencing financial difficulty and are having a problem paying their Telstra bill. This scheme is not available on an ongoing basis.

Please Note: You may not be eligible for Telstra Assistance if you have received assistance within the past 3-months under the policy for the Telstra Bill Assistance Program, however the Social Support Worker may be able to advocate with Telstra on your behalf to negotiate more time to pay, a suitable payment plan or refer you to other services who may be able to assist.

Clients may be referred to the Social Support Worker for Emergency Relief Assistance by an external service, internal services at Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation or clients may self-refer.

We also offer referrals to other services for Emergency relief to assist with;

  • Telstra Phone Bills
  • Rental Arrears
  • Services for Women, Men and Youth

As well referral pathways into internal Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation programs.

Housing Outreach Service

The Social Support Worker from Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation will be at the Campbelltown Housing Office every Monday from 9.00AM-12.30PM providing support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a range of housing needs, advocacy and support in addition to the full day Outreach that the Aboriginal Specialist workers from Housing offer every Tuesday at Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation.
